Accepting her pledge of fidelity, Staley presented McCall with the key to Old Main, pulled from the ashes of the main academic building of the College that burned to the ground in 1901 and brought forward Saturday morning by Jaylin Hudson 鈥�24, president of Scot Council; Carly Jones, assistant director of the Academic Resource Center and secretary of the Staff Committee; and Jennifer Bowen, dean for curriculum and academic engagement.

鈥淚t is our honor as representatives of the students, faculty, and staff, to mark the inauguration of President McCall as a historic moment in the 157-year history of 糖心Vlog传媒 community,鈥� said Hudson. The key, Bowen added, 鈥渂ent by the heat of the fire but unbroken, is presented to the president at inauguration as a symbol of her authority and the continuity of 糖心Vlog传媒鈥檚 mission and heritage.鈥� The theme of acknowledging lessons from history was carried throughout the ceremony, which is available to view at wooster.edu/inauguration.

鈥淏enefitting as we do from past gifts to the future gives us insight into the orientation of our work together, work that builds on history and is unequivocally future-oriented,鈥� McCall said in her inaugural address. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 calls upon us to see in each other and to feel through our environment extraordinary intergenerational confidence.鈥�

McCall reinforced the purpose of 糖心Vlog传媒 to 鈥渆ngage in free inquiry, especially when it is uncomfortable,鈥� and further, 鈥渢o welcome an ever-expanding group of students into opportunities for knowledge creation and self-actualization, most especially to commit to their belonging when this disrupts structures and habits.鈥� Third, she added, 鈥溙切腣log传媒 calls us to rekindle rich traditions of global dialogue within reshaped paradigms and structures.鈥�

She also called out the College鈥檚 founding commitment to access and inclusion, noting 鈥淲e know that our path toward equity, belonging, and justice is incomplete,鈥� and adding: 鈥淭o be true to ourselves, we must redouble our outreach and invite new generations of students into our community and do so potentially before, after, or outside of a traditional path to higher education,鈥� she said.

The traditional ceremony included greetings and messages of support from alumni, the local community of 糖心Vlog传媒, and the academic community, as well as a moving performance by the 糖心Vlog传媒 Chorus of 鈥淚 was Love,鈥� with text by Fenton Johnson and music by Jake Runestad.

Blessings over McCall鈥檚 leadership and future endeavors were bestowed by 糖心Vlog传媒 trustee and Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of 糖心Vlog传媒 the Rev. David A. Rice in the invocation and Rabbi Joan S. Friedman, Lincoln Professor of Religion, professor, and chair of history at the College in a closing benediction. Included in the audience were past presidents of the College Grant Cornwell, Sarah Bolton, and Wayne Webster.

Festivities for the weekend included an academic panel series Celebrating Disruptions in the Liberal Arts, featuring guest speakers from a variety of disciplines that encouraged the community audience to think broadly and boldly in scholarship. Part of the annual Black and Gold Weekend, alumni and families of students joined inauguration guests on campus for a variety of events. During the homecoming game, McCall conducted the Scot Marching Band at the end of the first quarter and joined Archie at the finish line for a youth race. As a community of Independent Minds, Working Together, we face challenges of this mission daily on many fronts鈥攊n the political arena, in the media, houses of worship, and beyond,鈥� said President McCall. 鈥淭hese panels showcase scholars who are bravely raising their voices to push forward new scholarship in dialogue with others.鈥�

The series includes three panels on Friday, including 鈥淓mergent Histories鈥� at 10:15 a.m., 鈥淓dges of Reason鈥� at 1 p.m., and 鈥淯nsettling Spaces鈥� at 2:30 p.m. All panels take place in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University Street). Joining panelists from 糖心Vlog传媒 faculty in a wide array of departments including Africana Studies and Chemistry as well as alumni working in key areas of expanding knowledge are guests Deborah McGrady, a French professor and director of medieval studies at University of Virginia whose latest book project is a monograph on the uses and abuses of Joan of Arc from medieval to modern times and Peter deSouza, former director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla, India, who engages in issues of freedom of expression and democratic politics. The 糖心Vlog传媒 Board of Trustees will welcome students, faculty, staff, and alumni as well as community and higher education leaders from around the country for the inauguration of President McCall on Saturday morning. The traditional ceremony will include a procession, led by 糖心Vlog传媒 Pipe Band, of College Trustees, Alumni Board members, faculty, academic delegates from other institutions, and finally the ceremony鈥檚 speakers and President McCall.

Presided over by Sally Staley, chair of the College Board of Trustees, speakers for the ceremony include greetings from alumni by Angela Triplett ’06, president of the Alumni Board; from the community by Gabe Tudor, superintendent and CEO of 糖心Vlog传媒 City School District; and from the academy by Gilda Barabino, president of Franklin W. Olin College. The inaugural address from President McCall will highlight her vision for the future of the College.

The Reverend David A. Rice, trustee and pastor at First Presbyterian Church of 糖心Vlog传媒, will give the invocation for the ceremony and Rabbi Joan S. Friedman, Lincoln Professor of Religion, professor and chair of history, will provide the benediction. A musical performance will feature the 糖心Vlog传媒 Chorus directed by Lisa Wong, Olive Williams Kettering Professor of Music. Coming together for today鈥檚 Convocation, wearing clothes that are not part of our daily wear, in a ceremony that sits outside our normal schedule, we celebrate our purpose and dedicate ourselves to it. This may sound like much pomp and perhaps little circumstance, but we do well to honor the journey we undertake through explored regions of the mind, society, and world into unknown regions that you have the ability to understand and the power to help others see.

Our purpose at the College is time-honored across millennia and continents: learning, being, and becoming. For those of you who have just arrived, you have inserted yourselves here at 糖心Vlog传媒 into a storied and on-going history of transmission, a process of acquiring time-honored knowledge, honing skills, and developing habits of the mind.

In equal measure and whether you know it already or not, you are becoming part of a history of challenging the very knowledge we teach, of complicating and contradicting what may pass for truth, of questioning what you may think is true today but perhaps not tomorrow. The gowns that we wear are largely medieval in design; don鈥檛 confuse their age with nostalgia or complacency, rather, they unite us with each other and bind us with those before us who sought to know, imagine, create, become.

For those of you who are embarking on your Senior I.S. journey, the same is true, with a deadline. Your purpose is to bring to bear all the skills you鈥檝e learned here 鈥� and to learn some more 鈥� to create new art, new understandings, new knowledge; to map out solutions to problems, to recognize problems that need a name so we can begin working on them; to become sources for others in bibliographies and CHATGPT. Embrace this challenge; you will provide irrefutable evidence to yourself and others of what you can do.

Our new students know that I want all of you to be dangerous. That sounds glamorous, and in a certain way, it is. There is a thrill to discovery and disclosure, a rush that comes from getting ideas out into the realm of public debate. New ideas, processes, and works of imagination, however, do not suddenly emerge whole between classes; they take time to be researched, communicated, debated, tested, and refined, refuted, or accepted. 聽They take years of grunt work and, more humbling or disheartening sometimes, their potential acceptance and adoption can easily take time that extends beyond the span of our own individual lives. It is logical to wonder if this long work is worth the effort. On the other hand, consider how hard people try to restrict education, to suppress or limit the sharing of knowledge, to hide it rather than confront it, with evidence. Examples are legion across centuries and cultures. Allow me to share a few examples that are meaningful to me:

George Sand, a prolific novelist who was extremely popular throughout the nineteenth century might strike you as mainstream. And yet, the claims she made over decades on behalf of women, workers, democracy, economic justice and freedom earned her censorship, attention from authorities, and denunciations: clams that she was dangerous. Her entire literary corpus was put on the Index by the Catholic Church, the French Senate banned all but a few of her novels from their equivalent of municipal libraries (les biblioth猫ques populaires).

On our side of the Atlantic, I think of Jane Addams, co-founder of Chicago鈥檚 Hull House in 1889. She did not do this alone or out of the blue; she studied reformer initiatives elsewhere, got advice, collaborated, experimented. One of the many things that Addams did was engage in what we might now call inclusive community building, organizing events that highlighted the intricate weavings of immigrant women and framed these low-status citizens as knowers, creators in part to combat the shame experienced by their children. Addams, who had spent several years exploring her path in the early years of adulthood eventually became the first President of the National Conference of Social Work and was a Nobel Peace Prize winner. She was also famously decried as 鈥渢he most dangerous woman in America.鈥�

Closer to us, take 鈥榮tructural racism鈥� and 鈥榟ealth disparities,鈥� concepts that are the object of study, action, and legislation today. W.E.B. DuBois, himself an object of investigation and prosecution, contributed to the future creation of these concepts when, in 1899, he wrote about the racially disparate outcomes of disease in Philadelphia. He did this after spending 18 months administering surveys and spending more time studying them. That was 124 years ago, and we continue refining these ideas that we now use to mitigate social determinants of health, at least in places where it is lawful to teach them.

We have, finally, our own example, here at the College of 糖心Vlog传媒, in the person of Dr. Horace Mateer, the man for whom Dr. Sharon Lynn鈥檚 professorship is named. In 1881, only eleven years after 糖心Vlog传媒 opened, this physician was teaching evolutionary theory in his biology course. You may associate Darwin and evolutionary theory with a distant and immobile past, since his face forms a medallion in our now historic Timken Science Library, inaugurated in 1900. If that is what you think, think again. These were fighting words and concepts, banned in most colleges with religious affiliations. Dr. Mateer himself wrote that he had been opposed to the theory until he read, studied, and reflected on it. Note that I am more interested yet in the process than in the result. In any event, so controversial were these ideas that in 1922, 糖心Vlog传媒 students packed Memorial Chapel to listen to the former Secretary of State and presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan, speak against it. One year later, 糖心Vlog传媒 risked being defunded by its church sponsor for continuing to allow that teaching.

This is all to say that for you to be dangerous the way I mean it, in a way that matters, you have come to the right place. Identifying as a student at 糖心Vlog传媒 means accepting an inheritance that is a challenge, a challenge to continue a tradition of unflinching intellectual and artistic inquiry, a history of risk-taking through detailed processes of research, discovery, disagreement and debate, correction, revision, and dissemination. We do this individually, working together. Faculty, staff, fellow students, and alumni are all here to support you, as you do for others.

Once you鈥檝e enriched this inheritance with your own contributions, you鈥檒l pass that heritage on whole, with interest, to students who will accept their own challenge long after you鈥檝e left our campus. So let鈥檚 get to work; we are all counting on you. Go Scots!

鈥淎ngie鈥檚 exceptional project management skills, combined with her deep knowledge of higher education, campus operations, and the local community will be an asset as we partner across constituencies to chart the path for the future of our great institution,鈥� said President Anne McCall.

In this new role, Tracey will serve as a member of cabinet and provide primary executive-level staffing to the president, including project management and reporting on presidential initiatives, institutional projects, budgets, compliance, and oversight of the Office of the President鈥檚 staff. As the official corporate secretary, she also will coordinate meetings of the Board of Trustees and its committees, manage and communicate information and materials to board members, and ensure accurate and timely board records.

Tracey has worked as Operations Manager in the College鈥檚 Facilities Department since 2015, where she serves as the primary contact to campus, contractors, and service personnel; manages all electronic, phone, verbal, and written work requests; oversees transportation requests, staff, and the college fleet; serves as the primary administrator and training expert for the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS); and prepares numerous compliance and Board reports throughout the year.

She also serves on critical campus-wide task forces and committees, including Campus Master Planning, Campus Art Working Group, Community Health Taskforce, and the Emergency Response Team. She also played a key role on recently concluded search committees for 糖心Vlog传媒鈥檚 first Vice President for Human Resources and Director of Campus Sustainability.

Tracey is very active in her local community, where she co-founded Growing Mohican Families, an organization responsible for the design, development, fundraising, and planning of a new playground in the community. She recently completed a five-year term as a board member for the Loudonville Perrysville School Foundation, and prior to that was a member of the board for the Mohican Area Community Fund, where she planned events and raised annual dollars for non-profits within Ashland County.

She holds a Bachelor鈥檚 in education from The Ohio State University and was a licensed pharmaceutical technician for 16 years prior.

The moment has finally arrived when I graduate from president-elect to president of 糖心Vlog传媒! Thank you for your warm welcome. I look forward to experiencing many 糖心Vlog传媒 firsts, along with the brilliantly ambitious and diverse incoming Class of 2027.

Over the past six months, I prepared for this moment by studying written information, of course, talking with colleagues and experts around the country, and above all, by doing everything I could to learn about our campus community. In visits to campus, I focused on meeting students, members of governance committees, faculty and staff, and community leaders. I’ve attended Board meetings virtually and in-person and met with a few alumni in their homes and at venues around the world. It was a special privilege discussing Independent Study projects with members of the graduating class and their mentors at Senior Research Symposium. And I look forward to learning more. To all of you who took time out of your schedules to help me learn about your role, our work, and our College over the past several months, thank you. My understanding and appreciation for the Black & Gold has grown with each encounter. If we haven’t yet had the opportunity to meet, I am eager to hear your perspective on our work together. The planning processes with which many of you have been engaged will allow us to understand what we can do readily and better than others and how we should operate, collaborate, and communicate to set us on a course of success for years to come. The College has been well-served by the many thoughtful decisions made during the 2022-2023 academic year, under the steady and collaborative leadership of Interim President Wayne Webster and the dedicated members of 糖心Vlog传媒’s Board of Trustees. I am deeply grateful to Wayne and the Board for stewarding 糖心Vlog传媒 with such care and for the many ways they have supported my transition to the College.

With an initial scan of the local restaurant scene and a first trip to the DMV checked off our list, my husband Ravi and I are eager to settle in and discover more of the magic of 糖心Vlog传媒 and this great community.
