I’d be happy to explain some of the artistic inspiration. I attended one of Dr. Palmer’s research talks last spring where he presented a swarm intelligence paper that reminded me of “pixel art” that I see in the video game industry. The original plan for my I.S. involved trying to have swarms make their own form of pixel art; although we ran into issues of what “art” really meant and decided to take a different approach with automated factories (but the emphasis on the visuals stayed).
