Hi Carly! I would encourage prospective Health Coaches to speak with current Health Coaches and our Pre-Health advisor to gain a more in-depth understanding of the program before applying. It is a significant commitment, but such a rewarding experience.

I would encourage new Health Coaches and those in training to enter with an attitude of humility. Ask questions and become comfortable using the phrase, “I don’t know, but I’ll do my best to find out”. Practice empathy and active listening while interacting with your patients, and demonstrate interest in their passions to begin to build relationships. If you find yourself struggling, reach out to your supervising nurse!

And for current Health Coaches interested in the Summer Health Coach Program, I would encourage you to attend an APEX info session and reach out to our Pre-Health advisor or a previous intern (i.e. Kirsten Buchan or I) with any questions you may have! I highly recommend this internship to any Health Coach planning to pursue a clinical healthcare career.
