Really appreciated your explanation of what you did with the children for the applied component. And congratulations on expanding on your work from the previous summer.

Did you have the opportunity to teach basic genetics concepts related to your research in any of your lessons?

Most of them have been either in the lab related to IS when I am working on IS or when I attend seminars with unfamiliar topics. In my IS, I have been using a lot of the organizational aspects of how protocols were kept and described as I found it was an easy way to keep myself organized over the summer, as well as looking back at how s2 cells were cultured to troubleshoot when my E. coli became contaminated. I have also been able to apply my study of transcriptional regulation to classes and seminars; it surprised me how represses and enhancers relate to my immunology class. This understanding is also helpful while attending seminars, I am able to feel proud when I have a better grasp of the research the speaker is doing than what I expected. I believe that listening in on the grad student’s talks this summer also helped with that. In terms of what I would like to do next, I have found that I want to involve more genetic work in my future. I have realized that I miss this!

Question: having had this lab experience over the summer, where there “aha” moments that you have experienced while taking classes this fall that connect to what you were doing during the APEX work? And any “aha” moments that prompted thinking about what you would like to do next?

Best regards,

David Arnosti
