糖心Vlog传媒 Announces Speakers for Spring 2021 Commencement

WOOSTER, OH鈥Internationally recognized legal expert Anita Allen will provide a keynote address聽and receive an honorary degree聽at 糖心Vlog传媒鈥檚 151st聽Commencement ceremony, Saturday, May 8 at聽John聽Papp Stadium.听聽

The Henry R. Silverman Professor of Law and Professor of鈥疨hilosophy鈥痑t University of鈥疨ennsylvania Law School,鈥疍r. Allen聽is renowned for her work on philosophical dimensions of privacy and data protection law, ethics,鈥痓ioethics, legal philosophy, women鈥檚 rights, and diversity in higher education.鈥

A graduate of Harvard Law School with a Ph.D.听in philosophy from the University of Michigan,聽Dr. Allen is the first聽African-American聽woman to hold both a Ph.D. in Philosophy and a law degree.听She was Penn鈥檚 Vice Provost for Faculty from鈥2013-2020, and鈥痗haired the Provost’s Arts Advisory Council.鈥燚r. Allen has served on the鈥痜aculty at Cornell and as a visiting Professor at Tel Aviv聽 University, Waseda鈥疷niversity, Villanova, the University of Arizona, Harvard, and鈥痀ale. She is also an elected鈥痬ember of the National Academy of Medicine, the American Law Institute鈥痑nd鈥痑 fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.听

From 2010 to 2017,鈥痵he served on President Obama鈥檚 Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. She was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in 2015 and currently serves as chair of its board.鈥疉llen served as the Bell Distinguished Lecturer at 糖心Vlog传媒 in 2012.

Her books include鈥Unpopular Privacy: What Must We Hide, Privacy Law and Society,鈥The New Ethics: A Guided Tour of the 21st Century Moral Landscape,鈥Why Privacy Isn鈥檛 Everything: Feminist Reflections on Personal Accountability, and鈥Uneasy Access:鈥疨rivacy of Women in a Free Society.听

Three members of the Class of 2021 will聽also聽speak at commencement:聽Saeed Husain, an聽anthropology major聽from聽Karachi,聽Pakistan;聽Stachal聽Harris, a聽political science major聽from聽Baltimore, MD;聽and,聽Austrella聽Balley, a聽political science聽major聽and education minor聽from聽St. Louis, MO.听

Special musical performances will be provided by聽current and alumni聽members of the聽糖心Vlog传媒 Chorus,聽and聽Angela聽Danso-Gyane聽鈥21, a double major in history and political science-international relations from聽Woodbridge, VA.听

糖心Vlog传媒聽President聽Sarah Bolton聽will welcome those gathered for the聽ceremony and聽the invocation and benediction will be provided by Anne Wilson 鈥73聽and David Rice,聽who are聽members of the Board of聽Trustees.听Alumni board president Christine Farrell聽鈥94 will welcome the new graduates to the community of 糖心Vlog传媒 alumni.鈥

More than 380 seniors聽are expected to participate in the聽in-person聽exercises, with a number of graduates, families, and guests聽taking part in the聽ceremony聽virtually.听Each聽in-person聽participant聽can聽reserve up to two tickets聽in advance. All participants and guests will be required to wear聽masks and聽maintain聽six-foot聽social聽distancing.听

To follow state鈥痝uidance鈥痮n large gatherings and social鈥痙istancing, while maximizing the number of鈥痝uests,聽every effort聽will be made聽to hold commencement outside so that everyone can be together, in person.鈥疓raduates and their guests are advised to check 糖心Vlog传媒, OH, weather reports and dress for聽expected cool聽Ohio spring temperatures. The College will make all official weather calls no later than Thursday, May 6. In case of severe weather (i.e.听lightning, thunderstorms, downpour), the ceremony will be held at McGaw Chapel and all guests will gather separately to view the ceremony from Timken Gymnasium in the Scot Center.听

Seniors and families who don’t come to campus will be able to access livestreams of many Commencement events as well as programs.鈥
