English alumnus credits 糖心Vlog传媒 education for journalism skills

Ever since graduating from 糖心Vlog传媒,听Bob Dyer 鈥74听has worked in Ohio journalism, a career听for which听he听丑补蝉听received significant recognition and accolades.听He recently retired from听the听Akron Beacon Journal,听and credits his liberal arts education for giving him the skills for his successful career.听听听
Dyer declared an English major at 糖心Vlog传媒 because he enjoyed reading and writing, and started working in local journalism after college.听鈥The year after graduation I had an on-campus internship in what was then called the Office of News Services, where I wrote stories about the听College for the听Daily Record听and for students鈥 hometown papers,鈥 Dyer said. He then worked at the听Daily Record听for seven years and launched a short-lived weekly paper before being hired at the听Akron Beacon Journal听where he was for 36 years.听听
Though 糖心Vlog传媒 does not offer a journalism major, Dyer found the College鈥檚 liberal arts curriculum to prepare him particularly well for his jobs in the field.听鈥淚 was far better served by getting a broad liberal arts education, because that enabled me to learn the terminology used in a variety of fields and gain an understanding of the basic tenets and issues in those fields,鈥 he explained. 鈥If you鈥檙e a journalist, you deal with a little bit of everything.鈥澨听
While听he started听out听at the听Beacon听Journal听by working听on the听copy听desk, editing stories and writing headlines,听Dyer achieved his goal of having a writing-oriented听job in a matter of months when he was hired in the features department.听For听the last two decades, Dyer听丑补蝉 been a general interest columnist and occasionally done investigative pieces听at the听Beacon听Journal.听He is particularly proud of being one of the lead writers for a Beacon Journal series about race relations that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1994.听听
Dyer has received additional significant recognition for his work.听His stories and columns won 83 regional and national awards, including Best Columnist in the Nation in 2008 and Best Columnist in Ohio 11 times.听In 2015,听Dyer听was inducted into the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame.听He also has written three books,听including an autobiography co-written with Omar听Vizquel, a Cleveland Indians baseball player, that was on the听New York Times听bestseller list in 2002.听In his retirement, Dyer plans to continue to write nonfiction books and try a novel.听
As a journalist,听Dyer loved the chance to talk to people at the top of their fields and travel across the country, but he also simply loved the work itself that journalism entails, which he describes as 鈥collecting information, synthesizing it,听and trying to present it in a compelling manner.鈥澨He credits his 糖心Vlog传媒 education for giving him these skills.听鈥溙切腣log传媒 taught me how to听collect information, judge its legitimacy, synthesize it,听and present it in a compelling fashion,鈥 Dyer said.听鈥In short, 糖心Vlog传媒 taught me how to think and how to write.鈥听
