Jenny, this is a great question! Over the summer I had a lot of time to think about this. I think there needs to be policy and structural changes as well as changes in social attitudes around mental health. By far the biggest barrier in getting mental health care is financial. Without insurance, it is very difficult for most people to afford counseling. Private insurance companies worsen these issues by limiting the kind of care that is covered and having co-pays or deductibles that are still too expensive for many people. Even at places like Nemeth which are accessible, compared to other counseling practices, people still cannot get the care they need because of insurance and monetary problems. I think this needs to be addressed through large-scale changes to the American healthcare system, most specifically guaranteeing that every American has access to health insurance. Socially, I believe we have made a lot of progress but we need to continue de-stigmatizing mental illness and encouraging everyone who is able to reach out and get help when they need it. Apologies for the lengthy response, I hope I answered your question!

Great question! Working with Nemeth really solidified my goals of working as a licensed therapist and showed me the pros and cons of working in a private counseling center. It has also given me an idea of some of the work I will do while in graduate school!

I’m wondering if your experience has you thinking about policy changes that need to occur to in order to allow better access to mental health care?
