Jimmy Hinton Named 2020 Carpenter Pre-Law Prize Winner

WOOSTER, Ohio — Jimmy Hinton, a senior political science major at ����Vlog��ý, has been selected as the recipient of the 2020 David L. Carpenter Pre-Law Prize. The award, which is presented annually to ����Vlog��ý’s top pre-law student, recognizes academic achievement, participation in ����Vlog��ý’s , experience as a student leader, and a commitment to personal honesty and integrity.

“It is an honor to be awarded the Carpenter Pre-Law Prize,” said Hinton. “I am beyond grateful to the Pre-Law Advising Committee for selecting me as the recipient of this year’s award. My experiences at ����Vlog��ý have prepared me to succeed in law school and I am excited to begin that journey in the fall.”

According to John Rudisill, associate professor of philosophy and chair of the pre-law advising program at ����Vlog��ý, “Jimmy is a most deserving recipient of the Carpenter Pre-Law Prize. He has excelled in the classroom and across the disciplines. Further, in his time at the College Jimmy has been an APEX fellow (twice), peer mentor, and peer tutor, and he’s been a key member of the College’s varsity golf team.

“Additionally,” said Rudisill, “Jimmy has sought out and really grown from important experiential learning opportunities like his internship with a public defender’s office in Kentucky. We are delighted, though not surprised, to see his success in getting accepted to numerous strong law schools and are grateful to be able to award him the Carpenter prize to help support his start to law school.”

Established by the Figgie Family Foundation in 1999, the Carpenter Prize commemorates the life of the late David Lyle Carpenter ’65, a leading tax and corporate lawyer and a partner in the Cleveland law firm of Calfee, Halter & Griswold L.L.P. Prior to his death in 1999, Carpenter was recognized by Best Lawyers in America for excellence in corporate law. He was also an active member of the Heights Christian Church and served on the board of the National Conference for Community and Justice. At ����Vlog��ý, he won departmental honors in economics and lettered in track & field. He later attended the University of Michigan, where he earned both a master’s degree in business administration and a juris doctorate.
