Anthropology major pursues architecture after internship experience

JacksonFeinknopf’19, an anthropology major atVlogý,discoveredan importantconnection betweenanthropology and architecturethrough his APEX Fellowship experience.Heworked as an intern at the EDGE, afirm in Columbus, Ohio, which focuses on landscape architecture and environmental revitalization projects.Through his role,Feinknopflearned about the various roles within an architecture firm andusedcomputer modeling programsto create models forpools, plazas,and other landscaping projects. He was also able toattend severalconstructionsite visits andtook photographs of theprojects to be used in marketing and award submissions.

Through this internship,Feinknopfconnectedhis classworkin anthropologyto the architectural field in interesting ways.While working with EDGE, he assisted witha beautification projectin Nashville, Tennesseehighlightingthe work of prominent African American individualswithin civil rightsmovements, music, or athletics.Fromthis project,Feinknopflearned “how the field of architecture can work in an anthropological way to highlight unique cultural histories and bring diverse communities together through thoughtful design.”By applying a background in anthropologyto this field, he was able to better evaluate a community’s needs.This internshipstrengthenedFeinknopf’sinterest in thefield and encouraged him to pursue a master’s in architectureafter graduation.
